Disaster Risk Reduction and Management

Disaster risk induced food insecurity in Ethiopia is a rural phenomenon and the challenges are more pronounced in drought and flood prone pastoral areas like Afar region. The Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) interventions of SSD build local capacities to prevent and mitigate the impact of hazards on communities at risk. This is achieved by enhancing individual survivability and community readiness.

SSD’s DRR interventions focus on building resilience of the local community to better cope with natural disasters and shocks through risk reduction and mitigation practices that includes traditional early warning system, land use planning, better resource management strategies and more importantly through diversifying means of livelihoods.
