What we do

SSD undertakes a range of rural development programs focused on

  • Pastoralist Livelihood support and Food Security
  • Disaster Risk Reduction and Management
  • Education Support programs
  • Women Economic Empowerment
  • Natural Resources Management
  • Community Capacity Building
  • Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
  • Emergency Response

SSD’s projects are implemented through field offices located in specific project woredas in its geographic focus regions. Currently, SSD works in Afar and Oromia Regional States. Understanding the potentials and contributions SSD can make, the Afar and Oromia Regions are providing all the necessary support including budgetary contributions amounting to 20-30% of the funds needed for project planning and implementation. This is presently about Birr Seven Million a year, and represents an unusual level and type of cooperation between GOs and NGOs in Ethiopia.

SSD is recognized for its pioneering spirit and willingness to take on the harshest physical challenges in penetrating the most neglected and remotest areas in Afar. We focus on attacking the root causes of poverty and breaking the cycles that keep people from being healthy, productive and self-supporting.
